Bluebird focuses largely on sustainability.  We constantly look for ways to make positive changes to ease pressure on the environment, and we seek all teams we work with, to adopt this approach.  Strategies to encourage builders to recycle and reduce landfill, the removal of bin chutes, and incorporating ways to minimise operational waste, is just part of the Bluebird way.

Some of the benefits for reducing waste on behalf of the environment, include less waste going into land fill, which in turn lowers the risk of omitting pollutants.  In addition, there is less use of natural resources and lowers carbon dioxide emissions from producing, using, and transporting waste.

There are also benefits for reducing waste on behalf of developers.   These include cutting costs by effectively using materials.  This can lead to more business opportunities because sustainable and green projects differentiate your company from others. These days clients are more likely to favour a more sustainable approach.

From a design aspect it is essential to consider bin storage areas so they can be integrated into the overall design of the development and encourage users to recycle rather than lazily dump everything into the waste bin.

Bluebird strive to complete the following in and around our projects and construction sites:

  • Instead of managing the waste once it has been generated, we look at ways to avoid the generation of that waste in the first place

  • Order the correct amounts of material to reduce overall waste

  • Have a separate waste and recycle bin onsite

  • Waste and recycle bins are placed in convenient, well-maintained, easy to access areas, making it attractive for workers to dispose of waste correctly

  • Major waste bin/s located on ground level

  • Ensure workers are aware of their responsibilities in relation to construction waste

  • Monitor the site to ensure the waste management plan is being implemented and followed

 

To minimise waste there must be waste management systems throughout the entire development process. These systems must be convenient and simple to use because effective systems encourage proper use, reduces landfill, maintains the cleanliness of the site or building and most importantly, minimises the impact waste has on our environment.
