DO MORE - Biophilic Design

What is Biophilic Design?

“Biophilic design seeks to connect our inherent need to affiliate with nature in the modern built environment.  An extension of the theory of biophilia, biophilic design recognises that our species has evolved for more than 99% of its history in an adaptive response to the natural world which is instrumental to people’s physical and mental health, fitness, and wellbeing.”

~ Stephen R. Kellert, (2015) What Is and Is Not Biophilic Design? Metropolis Mag.

Why choose Biophilic Design?

This design is used in the building industry in the aim to increase occupants connection to the natural environment through the use of nature, space and place conditions. The connection between our homes and the natural environment can increase feelings of wellbeing, productivity and stress reduction. Biophilic design makes this connectivity possible through a range of principles, such as the use of direct light, ventilation, blending indoor and outdoor elements plus living greenery.

To look after our environment it is important to discover ways to integrate natural forms, processes, and systems into everything we do. When Biophilic Design is successfully integrated it can have a variety of positive affects on human health and wellness. By incorporating this concept into your next project it will not only be pleasing to the eye of potential buyers, but you can walk away knowing you created an environment that will positively affect the residents.

By connecting humans with nature, Biophilic Design has been associated with:

  • Managing and reducing stress

  • Increasing cognitive performance and productivity

  • Improving overall mood and well-being

All these qualities are of high importance as the global population continues to urbanise.

At Bluebird, we’ve prioritised biophilic design at our Highgate Hill project and many other developments to offer a beautiful, healthy space, for the future residents and wider community.
